Tropical Storm Oscar poses ‘no immediate threat’ to the Hilton Head area after hitting Cuba

After causing the deaths of at least six people in Cuba, Tropical Storm Oscar was not expected to impact the Hilton Head Island area or the southeastern coast of the US as it moves northeast across the Atlantic Ocean. Meteorologists said the system was the “smallest hurricane on record,” with a wind field of only about 6 miles (10 kilometers).

Oscar was a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall in the Bahamas on Saturday. Hurricane specialist Michael Lowry said “no forecast model” expected Oscar to become a hurricane before hitting the island.

“It’s not often that we see a colossal failure in hurricane forecasts,” Lowry wrote in an analysis published Monday. Oscar’s small size made it difficult for computer models to estimate its development, he added.

Oscar posed “no immediate threat” to the United States as of Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Meteorologists in Melbourne, Florida said the storm could bring powerful waves to East Coast beaches in the coming days.
