NFL investigating whether Ravens’ Roquan Smith used hip-drop tackle on play that injured Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin

At first glance, it’s hard to tell whether Smith twisted or dropped his hip with all his weight while going low on Godwin, and he wasn’t flagged for the tackle.

Nevertheless, the league believes the game needs a closer look.

Godwin was in the middle of a potential career year for seven weeks. He leads the NFL in receptions with 50 and has amassed 576 receiving yards with five touchdowns.

His injury is one of the most high-profile injuries that may fall under the new hip-drop tackle ban.

In Week 2, Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon suffered a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss three games after Chicago Bears linebacker TJ Edwards illegally took him down with a hip-drop tackle. Edwards was also unmarked during the match, but was later fined $16,833.

If the NFL believes Smith used a similar tackling mechanism, he could receive similar pay.
