NFL insider reveals DeAndre Hopkins was Chiefs’ plan B after failed Cooper Kupp talks

It’s already been an eventful day for the Kansas City Chiefs. The team announced early Wednesday morning that they had indeed made a trade for a wide receiver.

After months of speculation, the Chiefs went out and traded for Tennessee Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. In the deal, the Chiefs sent Tennessee a fifth-round pick who has a chance to become a fourth-round pick based on playing time and a Super Bowl appearance; interesting terms to say the least.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has looked fine at best in recent weeks, but the Chiefs continued to win thanks to their strong defense and offense, making enough plays to remain undefeated.

Now Mahomes has a former All-Pro wide receiver in his arsenal and while Hopkins isn’t what he once was, I’m confident this change of scenery will pay off.

The intriguing aspect of all this is the emerging report that the Chiefs were not only in talks for Hopkins, but also for LA Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

The Rams had announced this week that they were willing to trade Kupp, but the Chiefs did not want to discuss Los Angeles’ asking price, according to the newspaper. The Athletics Dianna Russini.

The Rams made it public that they wanted a second-rounder in exchange for Kupp, and that they were willing to pay a portion of Kupp’s salary in exchange for the pick. But in Kansas City’s end, only half of that equation was met.

The Chiefs liked the idea that LA was willing to pay some of Kupp’s salary, but they weren’t willing to give up a higher draft pick.

Oddly enough, both wide receivers carry risks. To start his career, Hopkins stayed largely healthy. However, in recent years, Hopkins’ health has deteriorated as he has faced some more significant issues.

The same goes for Kupp, who was recently placed on injured reserve again. Kupp has also suffered some significant injuries in recent years, and the Chiefs have likely taken that into account in trade talks.

Giving up a second-round pick in exchange for a guaranteed healthy Kupp would be one thing, but knowing that the Stallion hasn’t enjoyed good health in recent seasons is a good reason to pause. Kupp missed five games last year due to injury after missing eight in 2022.

Fans will probably salivate when they think of Kupp in Kansas City, and rightly so. When healthy, he is still one of the best wide receivers in football. But that’s a big ‘if’. Instead, giving up a Day 3 pick for another former Pro Bowler and All-Pro seemed like the best choice for the Chiefs.
