Update: Bad The daughter of filmmaker Jon M. Chu arrived late Saturday night as the LA premiere of his latest Universal feature continued at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

The director shared a photo of his newly arrived daughter on social media.

“I can’t believe this happened while the movie was premiering,” he said in a message. “There is magic in the air. Welcome to our world. You’re going to do great. You have many witches on your side.”

Chu shared a photo of a suit for the premiere in a garment bag earlier that evening and joked, “Should I just wear the suit for the birth?”

Chu and his wife have four other children: Willow, 7; Jonathan, 5; Ruby, 3; and Iggy, 20 months, the last born during the production of Bad.

Bad, based on the long-running Broadway show, opens on November 22 and is expected to do well above $85 million at the domestic box office.

Previous, November 9, 6:58 PM: Jon M. Chu had a bit of a scheduling conflict with the Los Angeles premiere of his riveting musical Bad.

Ahead of the film’s West Coast debut, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Chu spoke to attendees, cast and crew in a recorded clip explaining that he was in the hospital awaiting the birth of his fifth child with wife Kristin Hodge .

With filmmaking flair, the Crazy rich Asians Helmer opened his video with a demonstration of hospital surveillance systems, to audible laughter and laughter from the audience.

“I’m so sorry I can’t be there,” he said. “It’s November 9, I was at the hotel across the street ready to come. My whole family is there, my friends, all our loved ones are there. And I’ve waited three years for this moment to share our movie with you, but I’ve waited my entire life for this moment to now have our fifth child.

Chu jokingly added, “Of course this little girl knows when to show up, so anyway, I wish I could be there.” But here I am.” He then thanked Universal Pictures, original Broadway creatives Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, as well as producer Marc Platt.

“To everyone who believed in this project from the very beginning before I came along, and who believed in me to continue this tradition,” Chu said. “And I’m so happy that you can see the movie on this big screen with the speakers.”

He then went to Platt, who introduced the cast and film: “I tried to make a video introducing them, and it was very awkward.” As he signed off, Chu blew a kiss and said, “I love you guys.”

Chu also discussed the big life update in an Instagram Story posted today: “This movie has always moved in mysterious ways,” he wrote. “Today is a day that I have been dreaming about for a long time. Two babies (a movie and a little girl) all at the same time and I really couldn’t be happier. I won’t be able to be with you all at the Wicked Premiere tonight… there was a change in plans this morning about four o’clock… Instead, my wife and I will be welcoming our fifth child into our family and no, that we shall not be called her Galphaba.”

He continued, “Sending all the love to our insanely talented cast and crew tongiht (sic). They deserve it and extend a little extra welcome for my little girl who is bursting her bubble and coming into our world at any moment. If she can have even a fraction of the courage that my wife @cynthiaerivo @arianagrande @michelleyeoh_official or @marissa_edob has, then one day she too will defy gravity.”

In a separate post, with an image of his tuxedo for the night, he joked: “Should I just wear the suit for the birth?”

On November 22, the adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway production based on Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel, which tells the story of The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West – follows the relationship between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda the Good Witch (Ariana Grande) leading up to their ultimate fate.

Speaking to Deadline ahead of the festivities, stars Erivo and Grande praised Chu as directors: “I think Jon Chu is one of the most incredibly generous leaders in the world. Not only is he a genius, visionary, director and art kid… but he also conducts the warmest, safest and most gracious space in the world, and I think that’s why people feel so comfortable going there with their performances, because he makes everyone feel so safe,” Grande said.
