Laverne Cox is the Daily Show’s newest contributor

Laverne Cox is no stranger The Daily Showhas been a guest in the program three times since 2016. But on Thursday, Cox made her debut in a new role: Daily show Contributor.

In honor of Spirit Day – which GLAAD describes as “the most visible anti-bullying movement in the world that inspires LGBTQ youth, especially transgender and non-binary youth, to live their lives in their truth and authenticity” – the Emmy Award-winning nominated actor/activist on Thursday evening’s “In my opinion” commentary.

Cox stood on stage for more than ten minutes, where she promptly attacked Republicans who have chosen to weaponize transphobia in the fight to win back the White House.

“When you think about bullying, you probably think it happens in schools. And you’re right about that,” Cox said, as a graph indicated that 52 percent of LGBTQ youth attending middle or high schools have reported being bullied. “But nowadays bullying also happens by people who are much more immature than teenagers: politicians,” she explained.

After briefly listing the more than 500 anti-LGBTQ laws passed in the US alone this year – including limiting what school teachers can say about gender identity, banning gender-affirming care for children under 18, and banning of trans youth to participate in sports – Cox pointed out how much politicians can get done if they really put their minds to it.

“Great job, legislators,” she said. “Thank you for stopping schools from teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity. Because pretending trans kids don’t exist means making them disappear. Just like pretending climate change doesn’t exist means it will go away. So I guess we’ll never know why my t*ts sweat in December.”

Cox’s evisceration continued for several more minutes — and she wasn’t afraid to name names when it came to the lawmakers fighting the hardest to advance their anti-LGBTQ ideologies. Among them? Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which was especially surprising to Cox. “The way that guy rocks a pair of high heels, you’d think he’s an ally,” she admitted.

Ultimately, Cox suggested that instead of dehumanizing each other, we should “rehumanize” each other, and he showed the audience how to do that by delivering a message directly to North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, whose recent porn scandal included declaring his love. of trans porn.

“I don’t see you as just another evil fanatic hanging out on NudeAfrica.com,” she told Robinson. “I see you as a human being with needs and hopes and, yes, contradictions, just like the rest of us. And also the ability to type very sharply with just one hand.”

Given the audience’s raucous applause, something tells us this won’t be the last time we see Cox share her “opinion” on The Daily Show– the same slot that Charlamagne Tha God regularly occupies, and where Leslie Jones, John Leguizamo and writer/comedian Ricky Velez have all taken turns at the microphone this season.
