Panathinaikos 1-4 Chelsea, UEFA Conference League: Post-match reaction, ratings

For the first five minutes of the match it was all Panathinaikos.

Then it was all Chelsea for the next 85, plus stoppage time.

In the first half, much of that control was of the dominant but not directly threatening variety, but midway through the half we opened the scoring when Mudryk set up Félix for an easy tap-in. We could have had more, but we lacked the real killer instinct to make it happen.

There were no such shortcomings in the second half, however, with a three-goal volley in the opening fifteen minutes of the period quickly putting the match to bed. Félix got another, Mudryk also got a well-deserved one and Nkunku converted a penalty for good measure.

Both teams started to make changes and the home side got a consolation, but the outcome was never in danger or in doubt.

Carefree.

  • Not quite a full B squad, with Cucurella and Enzo starting: Cucu as left back, while Veiga moved to centre-back, just like he did for Portugal last time.
  • Enzo captain, then Disasi
  • No debut for Rak-Sakyi or Mheuka, but plenty of minutes from George and Guiu, plus a run-out for Chukwuemeka
  • He almost got through without a yellow until Disasi’s late foul
  • Next: Newcastle at home in the league, then Newcastle away in the League Cup
