Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou eases concerns over Son’s fitness ahead of the match against AZ Alkmaar

Ange Postecoglou has allayed concerns over Son Heung-min’s fitness after the Tottenham Hotspur captain missed training ahead of Thursday’s Europa League match against AZ Alkmaar.

Son made his return from a hamstring injury and scored a goal in Spurs’ 4-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday, but was absent from training on Wednesday.

“Sonny had some pain after the weekend, he would never be involved tomorrow anyway,” Postecoglou explained. “So we’ll leave him out tomorrow and see how he does.”

Son, 32, suffered a hamstring injury during Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Qarabag in the Europa League on September 26, forcing him to miss the next three matches in all competitions, including the 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion .

Son was also left out of South Korea’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Iraq and Jorda earlier this month.

Spurs are turning deadly on the break – perhaps they should embrace a counter-attack

Postecoglou, meanwhile, also provided an update on the summer signing of Wilson Odobert, who could make his return after more than a month of absence with a hamstring injury.

Odobert, 19, has not played since Spurs’ Carabao Cup win against Coventry City and the forward is now back in training. However, head coach Postecoglou is cautious about his preparedness to compete.

“Potentially (he could feature) we have to be careful with him because he has missed a lot and he has only had training this week,” Postecoglou added. “He will be involved in the team, but playing time will depend on the match.”

Tottenham aim to maintain their perfect Europa League record to date with a win against Alkmaar in North London.
