Ramiro and Silvia, their Peruvian grandparents, moved to the US over thirty years ago and have been a constant presence in the Thompsons’ lives ever since. Alyssa is 13 months older than her sister Gisele, but both are much older than their youngest sister Zoey, who is about to turn 12. Athletics seems to run in the family bloodlines; while father Mario played football and basketball, as well as track and field at Occidental College, mother Karen also tried a career in basketball during her youth. That explains why the parents never had television sets with the children and rather encouraged them to play outside. Mario and Karen put their both introducing daughters to sports such as volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and athletics before delving into the beautiful game.

In fact, not only Alyssa, but even Gisele is a professional and successful footballer who plays as a right back.
