Amy Berryman’s new Off-Broadway play is about two sisters who train to become astronauts.

The new play Walden may be set on Earth, but it has an alien concept. Amy Berryman’s play, currently playing at Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theater Off-Broadway, follows two sisters. Their father trained them to be astronauts, but when a sister decides to leave NASA, a conversation begins: is it better to stay on Earth to revive the planet or colonize the stars? “I read it right after I had my daughter, in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, which felt very tense,” star Emmy Rossum told Playbill. “And (it felt) kind of like the end of one world and the beginning of another. I felt so connected to the theme and the story of these two sisters.” Watch Rossum, her costars and the show’s creators discuss the new play above.

Rossum (whose credits include the Showtime series Shameless) plays Stella, who left NASA. SuccessionZoë Winters plays Cassie, who continued with the space research group. As Winters teases, “There will be some sci-fi elements that will be a lot of fun.”

But beyond the science fiction themes, the play is also about people, says director Whitney White: ‘The play is about three people trying to make big decisions about how to save the future, how to save the world, how to dream. for themselves into the future….It is a beautiful dance between the profound and the everyday.”

Walden runs until November 24. Motell Foster also plays in it. The Off-Broadway production features scenic design by Matt Saunders, costume design by Qween Jean, lighting design by Adam Honoré and sound design by Lee Kinney. The cast is by Taylor Williams.
