UFC 308 results: Rafael dos Anjo’s leg injury abruptly ends fight with Geoff Neal

Rafael dos Anjos had a birthday to quickly forget.

The longtime veteran and former UFC lightweight champion turned 40 on Saturday but will not be able to celebrate with a win as an injury led to a TKO stoppage loss to Geoff Neal in their welterweight bout at UFC 308.

Check out the finishing sequence below.

The official time of the stoppage was only 90 seconds in round 1.

Up until that point, Neal had controlled much of the action with his cutting attack, dropping Dos Anjos early before letting him back to his feet. Neal continued to pressure dos Anjos and after cracking him with another combination, dos Anjos fell back to the mat, holding his leg. Dos Anjos then gave a clear indication to referee Mark Smith that he could not continue and the fight was disallowed.

It is not yet known exactly what injury Do Anjos has suffered.

While it may not be how Neal (16-6) wanted the fight to go, he will be eager to get back into the win column after two straight losses. With the win, Neal increases his UFC record to 8-4.

Neal then used his post-fight interview time to indicate that he plans to continue climbing the ladder for a possible rematch with UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad. The two first fought at UFC Brooklyn in January 2019, with Neal earning a unanimous decision victory over the future titleholder.

For dos Anjos (32-17), this means his third loss in a row and the fourth in his past five games.
