Kevin Stefanski to Ken Dorsey: Reasons why Browns HC stopped play-calling

The Cleveland Browns enter Week 8 of the NFL season with a lot of changes. Some appear to be permanent for the remainder of the season, while others are subject to change:

Although there is hope that Winston can replicate Joe Flacco last year the Browns season doesn’t end in the playoffs even though they can knock off a depleted Baltimore Ravens team in Week 8.

Stefanski, who hands over play-calling to Dorsey, wonders if Mike Vrabel could be the team’s next head coach.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Stefanski made the move to Dorsey in part because the timing worked with the move to Winston, but that was only one piece of the puzzle:

In addition, there was a time management problem for Stefanski. The offense was struggling and Stefanski still spent most of his time working with that unit. If it didn’t help, that time wasn’t used properly.

The move gave Stefanski the freedom to attend more defensive meetings this past week, allowing him to coach the entire team and, just as importantly, be available to the entire team.

There is a lot of logic in the reasons. Switching both QB and play-caller in the same week generally leads to a fresh start and since it didn’t work, freeing up Stefanski’s time makes sense.

If you read between the lines, “be equally important: be available to the entire team” seems to make some sense. Whether it was just a general rift between Stefanski and the other two parts of his team (defense and special teams) or perhaps the concerns of DC Jim Schwartz and special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, it appears Rapoport has heard concerns from Cleveland.

Rapoport also discussed Winston’s history and Watson’s future, noting that “all options are on the table” to move forward with their highly paid quarterback.

Why do you think Stefanski turned over the play-calling to Dorsey? Do you think it’s a big deal or are you just trying to do something different after a terrible start? Share your thoughts in the comment section below
