When Christian McCaffrey, Dre Greenlaw May Return – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Kyle Shanahan provided several injury updates on Monday regarding the 49ers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as updates on players with existing injuries, including running back Christian McCaffrey.

In addition to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who suffered a knee injury during the season, and fellow wideout Deebo Samuel, who spent the night in the hospital with pneumonia, tight end George Kittle suffered a foot sprain and is day-to-day, as is receiver Chris Conley with an ankle sprain.

But as far as San Francisco getting reinforcements from players who have yet to play this season, both fans and the team will have to exercise some patience. Shanahan said McCaffrey likely won’t return until after the bye week, which comes after the 49ers host the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday night in Week 8.

“Christian continues to make progress in his rehabilitation,” Shanahan said via conference call. “He hasn’t had any setbacks, so it’s all good news so far. I’d be surprised if I got it back this week. But hopefully the bye week will go well and I will have a much better chance there immediately after the bye week.”

Kicker Jake Moody, who suffered a high ankle sprain while making a tackle in Week 5, has a similar time frame for return as McCaffrey. At the earliest, the 49ers’ third-round pick of the 2023 NFL Draft could return after the bye week in which the team travels to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers.

Moody’s injured ankle is his kicking foot, which could affect his accuracy and make his return dependent on how he feels once he actually starts kicking again.

As for linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon in Super Bowl LVIII, the 49ers will have to wait a little longer, but the news is still positive.

“Greenlaw is still a few weeks away,” Shanahan said. “Everything is still going well, but there is no time for that at the moment.”

Greenlaw has been consistently seen near his position group during practice, as well as on the sidelines during games. All three starting players can’t return soon enough to help right the ship with the 49ers sporting a 3-4 record as they fight to keep their playoff hopes alive.
