Two state officials in battleground states Arizona and Pennsylvania warned American voters on Sunday that foreign adversaries are trying to sow distrust in American democracy with misinformation about noncitizens voting in the 2024 presidential election.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Pennsylvania Commonwealth Secretary Al Schmidt were both asked during an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation” about U.S. intelligence showing that Russia has created a fake video and online messages used to spread accusations about citizens’ ability to vote in federal elections.

“It is clear that foreign actors with bad faith want to undermine confidence in our election results,” Schmidt said. “The video you referenced, from Bucks County to anyone with years of experience in election administration, was conspicuously fake. But if you don’t, it’s so easy for people to be somewhat misled by others who are trying to undermine confidence in the elections. our system of government.”

Fontes said foreign enemies want to “sow distrust in our democracy” and further divide Americans, adding that the source of much of this “disinformation” comes from outside the US and is then amplified by people in America who help these adversaries.

“The claim that this is something that could swing an election or is something much bigger than it is, that’s the nonsense we’re dealing with,” Fontes said. “And unfortunately, we still have candidates, elected officials and people with big megaphones who lie. They lie directly to the American public and essentially play the role of useful idiots.”

Fontes further encouraged Americans to “stop being a Russian puppet” and “look at the people who are actually doing the work.”

“There are safeguards in the system from tooth to tail to ensure that voter fraud, in the few cases that do occur, is identified, investigated and prosecuted responsibly,” he said.
