Yankees ride star Anthony Volpe to World Series Game 4 victory over the Dodgers

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees are still alive in the World Series, thanks in large part to their young, homegrown shortstop.

Facing the specter of an embarrassing sweep, the Yankees got a grand slam from Anthony Volpe and excellent work from their bullpen in an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 on Tuesday.

“Good night to us and tomorrow we get another chance,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night in the Bronx. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole gets the start against Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty.

No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win the World Series and the Dodgers remain confident.

“I don’t think anyone expected those guys to lie down. We had some at-bats that I thought could have been better, but we knew it was a bullpen game,” manager Dave Roberts said. “As far as outcomes go, to have six guys in your cage that feel good and rested, I feel good about that.”

Volpe was a thorn in the Dodgers’ side all night

Volpe did it all on a night when New York needed all it could get from anyone, finishing 2 for 3 with the aforementioned slam, three runs scored, two stolen bases and several sparking plays in the field.

With the home team trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Yankee Stadium, which was mostly quiet during Game 3 on Mondayfinally erupted. Daniel Hudson, the second pitcher of the night for the Dodgers, hit Aaron Judge with one out. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a long single off the wall to right, sending Judge to third base. Chisholm then stole second and Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo walked, setting the stage for Volpe.

The native of nearby Watchung, New Jerseyplaced the first pitch he saw from Hudson five rows deep into the left field seats, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

‘I was rushing. I didn’t know I got it,” Volpe said. “And then I blacked out.”

But the route had not yet started.

After a slow start, it looked like Yankees starter Luis Gil might get through the fifth inning, but he made a mistake starting the frame and never regained his form. The Dodgers’ Will Smith hit an 0-2 fastball in the zone to the right field seats, cutting the Yankees’ lead to 5-3. Gil then walked Tommy Edman, prompting Boone to go to left-hander Tim Hill.

However, Hill was greeted with a single to center by Shohei Ohtani. Mookie Betts then grounded into a fielder’s choice, sending Edman to third base. The Yankees appeared to be out of the inning when Freddie Freeman hit a double play grounder to second, but he beat the relay throw to score Edman.

Gleyber Torres made an error in the right field area during the first inning, but when Betts made the catch, two boys in the stands grabbed his glove and one pried the ball out.

Torres was out, as were the fans, who were ejected for interfering with the game. The Yankees announced this later the fans wouldn’t return for Game 5.

“When it comes to the person in the game, it doesn’t matter,” Betts said after the game. “We lost. It doesn’t matter. I’m fine. He’s fine. Everything’s fine. We lost the game and I’m kind of focused on that. We have to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow.”

Earlier in the series, Torres hit a fly ball to left field Game 1 at Dodger Stadiumwhere a fan also reached out to catch him.

The bottom part of the Yankees’ order finally came through

Much maligned through the first three games of the Series, New York’s bottom four hitters accounted for five hits and scored seven runs in Game 4.

In the sixth, Austin Wells, who was eighth in the order, threw a fastball from Landon Knack into the second deck in right, giving New York a two-up lead.

Then the Yankees turned around in the eighth and put the game away. Volpe, their seventh-place hitter, got things started by beating the throw home on Alex Verdugo’s ninth-place grounder to second base.

Leaving nothing to chance, Torres followed with a three-run homer to right, Juan Soto hit a double to right, and the struggling Judge delivered an RBI single to left, perhaps an indication that the Yankees superstar might be more has to say in the coming Series. .

“Gerrit is the best pitcher in the game. We really believe in him,” Torres said of Cole taking the mound in Game 5. “But we have to do the job like we did tonight, so we don’t have to put all the pressure .on him.”

New York’s bullpen continued its strong recovery after a disastrous performance in Game 1. The combination of Tim Hill, winning pitcher Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr., Luke Weaver and Tim Mayza allowed just one hit in the final five innings.

Freeman once again got the Dodgers off to a fast start

As in Game 3, Freeman immediately made the Bronx faithful fear the worst when he hit a two-run home run to right field in the first inning.

The Yankees looked poised to get both runs back in the bottom half, but Chisholm and Stanton failed to get the job done, the latter with runners on second and third base with two outs.

The Dodgers had a chance to extend their lead in the second when Gavin Lux led off with a double down the first base line, but Gil got Smith to strike out and Edman into a double play.

The Yankees got on the board during their turn to bat in the second after Verdugo’s run-scoring groundout.
