Dodgers left: Jack Flaherty at start of Game 5

The Dodgers failed to complete a World Series sweep of the Yankees on Tuesday, setting up another Game 5 matchup between Jack Flaherty and Gerrit Cole.

Flaherty was dominant through his first five innings of work in Game 1 before Giancarlo Stanton crushed a go-ahead two-run home run against him. One pitch later, Flaherty was pulled after 90 pitches before it was announced he was leaving due to hamstring tightness.

The last time Flaherty pitched on the road in a postseason game, he allowed eight runs in less than three innings of work against the New York Mets in Game 5 of the NLCS.

As Flaherty looks to secure another championship for the Dodgers, he opened up about the concerns he faces following the Yankees’ 11-4 blowout of the Dodgers on Tuesday, according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

“I’m just afraid I’m going to get another one,” Flaherty said. “We know we have to continue to play really good baseball to make that happen because those guys are not going to go away quietly.”

The Dodgers’ bullpen ultimately couldn’t get the job done in Game 4, but most of their high-leverage bullpen pieces are well rested after four innings of one-run ball from Landon Knack and an eighth inning of 50-pitch from Brent Honeywell Jr.

Manager Dave Roberts talked about how big it was for Knack to eat up most of the innings for a Dodgers bullpen whose high-leverage pieces will be well-rested for Game 5, according to Jim Alexander of the Orange County Register.

“Landon actually threw the ball really well. … Four innings is the most he’s thrown in quite some time. And as we enter that last half, it just doesn’t make sense to use any of your influential guys. … Where we are now (Wednesday), knowing there is a bad day (Thursday), we are in a great spot with leverage relievers,” Roberts added.

When will fans ever learn that interfering with the game on the field is not beneficial to anyone? A Dodgers fan was ejected from the crowd after interfering with a Gleyber Torres fly ball in Game 1, and in Game 4, a Yankees fan tried to snatch a caught foul ball from Mookie Betts’ glove.

Tommy Edman spoke about the fan’s ill-fated attempt to obtain a possible souvenir, calling the act unacceptable, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

“Yeah, that looked ridiculous from my perspective,” Dodgers shortstop Tommy Edman said. “The man tried to take off his glove and pulled his wrist. … It looked like he got ejected, and I’m glad he did. I’ve never seen anything like it. That was unacceptable.”
