Kelsea Ballerini’s Patterns Tour Hair and Makeup Hides a Nod to Her New Album

If you were lucky enough to get tickets to Kelsea Ballerini’s sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, October 29, you probably also had every word memorized Patterns– within four days of its release last week. Personally, I treated the evening as a cathartic sing-along to Ballerini’s fifth studio album, which the artist describes as a “brutal look at myself and the people I love most.”

As they surveyed the crowd, each attendee was dressed in fringed, cowboy boots or studs and glitter. Occasionally, a concertgoer would wear merchandise for Ballerini’s hits like “Cowboys Cry Too” or DIY tributes to “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat.” But my main takeaway was that about one in five of the 19,000 attendees – in terms of hair textures and colors – tried to recreate Ballerini’s tousled beach waves.

With all that in mind, it was no surprise when the CMT Award winner appeared on stage (sitting atop a huge pile of luggage) with that exact hairstyle, which was both a signature and a nod to her lyrics. “The texture and style are meant to evoke the emotions associated with her music and the duality of being pulled between the sandy beaches of South Carolina and New York,” Ballerini’s longtime hairstylist and makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan tells us exclusively. To execute a look that balanced the desired level of movement with enough support to withstand the jumping and running around on stage (Ballerini keeps things active), Deenihan focused on using products that could withstand against the energy or live shows.” The key, she says, was the Pantene Pro-V Volume and Body Mousse to maximize lift, a one-inch curling iron for soft, textured waves, and a light spray of the Pantene Pro-V Flexible Hold Alcohol-Free Hairspray for a tousled finish.

Ballerini’s makeup took a similarly ‘fresh and recognizable’ approach, with a flawless long-lasting glitter eye. (Seriously: I stared at her for an hour and a half and didn’t see a single crease or speck of fallout.) The product responsible costs just $11.99.
