NASA’s Perseverance rover gets a sweeping view of Mars’ large crater from a slippery slope (video, photos)

NASA’s Perseverance rover recently took a break from its mountain expedition to Mars to explore its old stomping grounds.

The car-sized Perseverance landed at the bottom of the 28-mile-wide Jezero crater in February 2021 to search for signs of former life on Mars and collect dozens of samples for future returns to Earth.

Perseverance has completed its work in the Jezero plains and is now climbing the western rim of the crater, on its way to explore new and diverse Martian landscapes. Late last month, however, the rover stopped to take in the sweeping view of Jezero – and share that view with its companions on Earth.

Mission team members stitched together 44 photos taken by Perseverance on September 27, creating a mosaic showing many of the landmarks the rover explored.
