Walmart worker dead in oven: What we don’t know

  • Police have not yet determined the cause and manner of death and it is unclear how the employee, Gursimran Kaur, ended up in the oven
  • Kaur emigrated from India and was discovered by her mother, according to members of the local Sikh community
  • “Our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family,” a Walmart spokeswoman said

Much remains unknown about how a 19-year-old Walmart worker was found dead in her store’s walk-in bakery oven earlier this month — even as some key details have emerged, including the victim’s identity and how her family is now grieving to a “beautiful woman”. girl” with “big dreams.”

Police in Halifax, Canada, have warned against “sharing speculative information” as they undertake what they call a “complex” and time-consuming investigation.

Walmart has also spoken out to say their staff is “heartbroken.”

Here’s what is and isn’t known about the tragedy.

When was the Walmart worker’s body discovered?

On Oct. 19, around 9:30 p.m. local time, Halifax Regional Police were “called to a sudden death” at the store, according to an Oct. 21 news release.

“A 19-year-old female who worked at the store was found deceased,” the release confirmed.

In a further update on Tuesday, October 22, police said the young woman was “laying in a large walk-in oven in the bakery department of the store.”

Who is the victim? The community remembers her

In a statement to PEOPLE, a member of the Maritime Sikh Society said the deceased employee was Gursimran Kaur, an immigrant from India, and that the group had set up a GoFundMe on behalf of her family.

“We are a Sikh Gurdwara, the largest in the Atlantic provinces of Canada,” Balbir Singh, a secretary of the Maritime Sikh Society, told PEOPLE. “This fundraiser began with permission from the immediate family, and all proceeds will go to (Gursimran’s) mother.”

According to the GoFundMe, Kaur — who was described as “a young beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams” — and her mother worked at the Walmart store for two years.

“The community is shocked by the entire incident,” Harjit Seyan, president of the Maritime Sikh Society, told Canada’s Global News. “We are really angry.”

How was she found?

On the night of October 19, Kaur’s mother reportedly tried to find her daughter after not seeing her for about an hour, according to the community GoFundMe. She became concerned when Kaur’s phone went unreachable, which fundraiser organizers said was unusual since Kaur usually had her phone on during the day.

The Maritime Sikh Society subsequently claimed that her mother eventually discovered her in the oven.

“The suffering of this family is unimaginable and indescribable. They need your support to get through this horrific time,” read the description of their fundraiser, which adds that all donations will go to the family.

A local member of the Sikh community told NBC News that they saw Kaur’s mother “on the day the incident occurred.”

“She was really desperate. She was really in a lot of pain,” said Satnam Randhawa, board member of the Maritime Sikh Society.

As of Friday, October 25, the GoFundMe campaign for Kaur’s family has raised approximately $140,000 and is no longer accepting donations.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who donated to support Gursimran Kaur’s family during this unimaginable time,” the fundraiser’s organizers wrote on GoFundMe. “Your kindness and generosity have been a source of strength to the family as they navigate this tragedy.”

Organizers explained that they had decided to “disable donations” to “begin the process of distributing the money to the family,” adding that the contributions “will help them in their next steps.”

The GoFundMe also stated that Kaur’s father and brother were in India and efforts were being made to fly them to Canada.

How did she get in the oven and die?

Halifax police have not yet reached a point in their investigation “where the cause and manner of death have been confirmed,” they said.

“We urge the public to exercise caution when sharing speculative information on social media,” police said in a statement last week. “Be aware of the impact speculation can have on the woman’s family, colleagues and loved ones.”

However, according to emergency audio from first responders, the woman was said to have been “locked” in the oven.

The approximately 90 second call, published by The Daily Mailshowed a dispatcher describing the incident as a “technical rescue call” at the store.

“Woman is locked in an oven in the bakery, the oven is on and not sure if the staff can turn it off,” the dispatcher said in the audio.

Shortly afterwards, however, another official said that “the person was out of the oven upon arrival” and that the case was being handled by regional police.

Police have not said how the woman ended up in the oven or provided any further public updates as their investigation continues.

Shop remains closed

Nova Scotia’s Ministry of Labour, Skills and Immigration initially issued “a cease and desist order for the bakery” at the Walmart in Halifax and then rescinded it as of Monday, Oct. 28, a spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

“The shutdown order was lifted upon confirmation of compliance, allowing bakery operations to safely resume should Walmart decide to do so,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

However, the location “remains closed until further notice,” a Walmart spokeswoman said.

“Our deepest thoughts are with our employee and their family,” spokeswoman Amanda Moss said. “Our focus remains on looking after our employees and ensuring they have the support they need. As the police have stated, this is a very complex case and the investigation is ongoing.”

Moss has not commented on other details of the incident, including whether Kaur, the employee, was at work when she was found dead.
