Marcel Reed, Conner Weigman QB battle: Mike Elko names starter for remainder of season

Marcel Reed was announced as Texas A&Ms starting quarterback against South Carolinabut the decision did not only apply to Saturday evening. He’ll be the starter moving forward, that is Conner Weigman will transition to a backup role, Mike Elko told ABC Molly McGrath.

Reed got the starting nod on Saturday night after Elko made the decision on Sunday, McGrath reported prior to kickoff. That meant Weigman would move into a backup role, and Texas A&M doesn’t plan to play both quarterbacks like they did last week against LSU.

Going forward, it will be Reed’s job, Elko told ABC. McGrath spoke to running back Le’Veon Moss about the decision and praised the skills Reed brings Collin Klein’s offence.

“Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko told us that he decided on Sunday that Marcel Reed is their starting quarterback and that Conner Weigman is now their backup quarterback,” McGrath said prior to the kickoff of Saturday’s game. “There is no plan to play Weigman here tonight. Of course, this Aggies team believes in Marcel Reed.

“Their running back, Le’Veon Moss, told us that his composure and his playmaking ability really convinced this team, saying, ‘Every time he steps on the field, something good happens. He is an underrated pitcher, his running ability opens more holes for our running backs to play.” I’m told nothing phases him.”

Weigman started last week’s game against LSU and completed 6 of 18 passes for 64 yards. But when Texas A&M trailed 17-7, Elko opted to put Reed in the game – and he sparked the offense. The Aggies scored on every drive after the switch en route to the primetime win over LSU. Reed completed both pass attempts for 64 yards and added 62 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

All week, Elko kept every quarterback decision close to the vest. He received several questions about which route he would take, including during a performance The Paul Finebaum Show on Thursday. Even then, he didn’t tip and said staff was still working on a plan.

“I think we’re still in our process,” Elko said. “We’ll find out as we go into the weekend and put out the guy on Saturday night who we think gives us the best chance to have success as a team.”
