Sebastian Stan’s controversial new film can now be watched at home

Sebastian Stan’s controversial Donald Trump film The student has become available to watch at home for American viewers.

The film, which hit theaters last month, focuses on the former US president’s early career in the New York real estate industry and his relationship with mentor Roy Cohn (played by Succession‘Jeremy Strong).

Viewers in the US can now buy and rent The student via Prime Video (costs $24.99 and $19.99). The film isn’t yet available at home for people in the UK – although fans can pre-order for £19.99 ahead of its release at a date yet to be confirmed.

The film received a mixed reception, but has since achieved an 81% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to Strong and Stan (who plays Trump), the Ali Abbasi film also stars Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivana and Martin Donovan as his father Fred.

The film proved controversial after initially struggling to find a US distributor amid legal threats from Trump’s US presidential campaign team.

Speaking of The student in a recent interview, abbasi told the Los Angeles Times that the film was not a “political hit piece”.

“It is in the nature of politics that you streamline things to achieve a certain effect, to gain or regain power,” he said. “And that’s really not the project here. We’re all interested in exploring the complexities.

“This is an experience and it’s an experience of the complexity of these characters. For me as an outsider, this was also my chance to look at the American system and the utter corruption that has been an institutionalized part of it, at least from my perspective.”

The student is available to purchase and rent on Prime Video in the US, with a UK release date yet to be confirmed.
