Raiders fire three coaches as season spirals out of control

Three coaches paid the price for the Raiders’ disastrous season.

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, as well as offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, the team announced, after the Raiders were embarrassed by the Bengals 41-24 on Sunday.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise as it is the first full season for the coaching staff.

“The guys kept fighting until the end, and I appreciate them for that,” Pierce said after the game, via Sports Illustrated. “It’s a group effort, it’s a team effort. We all have to find a way to do better. We’ll identify and look at a lot of things, from coaches, to play calling, to players, to execution, to situations, so that we all do a better job and put ourselves in a position in the fourth quarter where we actually have a chance to win. of overtaking.”

Las Vegas has a bye week to figure everything out, as Getsy led the Raiders to the fourth-worst yards-per-play average in the NFL (4.6).

Getsy came over from the Bears, serving as their offensive coordinator from 2022-2023 and working primarily with now Steelers backup Justin Fields.

Former Commanders offensive coordinator Scott Turner is expected to take over for Getsy in hopes of turning around one of the worst offenses in the league, which also saw star receiver Davante Adams traded to the Jets earlier this year.

The dysfunctional Raiders have now changed coordinators or head coaches midseason for the fourth time in five years.

Pierce, a first-year head coach after having some success as interim last year, has not been shy about saying poor performance will lead to massive changes.

Earlier this year, Pierce told reporters that his players weren’t putting in maximum effort and making “business decisions,” which perhaps not so coincidentally preceded the Adams trade.

Pierce has also turned quarterbacks all season, relieving Gardner Minshew in mid-game multiple times, including in Sunday’s loss.

Minshew was benched for Aidan O’Connell, but the second-year quarterback immediately broke his thumb, thrusting Minshew back into the starting role.

Desmond Ridder replaced Minshew in Cincinnati.

Las Vegas enters the bye week at 2-7.
