When will the presidential election results be announced?

The millions of Americans and people around the world eager to know the outcome of the U.S. presidential race should not expect definitive results on election night.

Over the past few decades, Americans have grown accustomed to the idea that news media typically predicted a winner in the battle for the White House by the time most went to bed or woke up the morning after they cast their votes.

However, at no time in the country’s history have election workers completed counting votes on Election Day. This year, local and national certification deadlines range from two days after November 5 to more than a month.

The 2000 and 2020 White House races had the longest delays in declaring a winner in the past 25 years. In 2000, the process was delayed by a famous neck-and-neck race and legal challenges. In 2020, a surge in mail-in ballots during the COVID pandemic delayed results. This year, state laws in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that ban election workers from counting early votes until Election Day could again delay results.

The longer polling stations, the neck-and-neck race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris and those delays are all expected to matter this year. But remember: Not knowing the results of Tuesday night’s election doesn’t mean anything went wrong, or that election officials across the country are having trouble tabulating ballots.

Here’s a look at when the world knew the results of the last six US presidential elections:

When did we know the 2020 presidential result?

The 2020 election between current President Joe Biden and Trump took place on November 3, 2020, but the news media did not call the race for Biden until four days later on November 7.

What does news media call presidential races before every ballot is counted in every state? Different points of sale have their own approach. For example, the Associated Press explains that a race occurs when “backing candidates no longer have a path to victory,” relying on researchers and other analysis.

When did we know the 2016 presidential result?

In 2016, the race between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Trump for Trump was called in the early hours of the next morning, shortly before 3 a.m. EST on November 9.

When did we know the 2012 presidential result?

In 2012, former President Barack Obama was projected to win a second term over the current senator. Mitt Romney before midnight on Election Day, November 6.

When did we know the 2008 presidential result?

Obama also won a quick victory on November 4, 2008 against Senator John McCain, with the media calling the race around 11:00 PM EST after the polls closed.

When did we know the 2004 presidential outcome?

Then-Sen. John Kerry conceded to then-President George W. Bush during a phone call shortly after 11 a.m. on the morning after the election, which was held on November 2, 2004.

When did we know the 2000 presidential outcome?

In an outlier in presidential races, the 2000 election between former Vice President Al Gore and then-Texas Governor George Bush was not decided until December 12, 2000, five weeks after Election Day.

The 2000 election was plagued by flawed ballot design and allegations of miscounting that led to legal controversy. Gore requested a manual recount of the votes in Florida, where the race was remarkably close. The Florida Supreme Court approved the recount, and the Bush campaign challenged the ruling.

The U.S. Supreme Court took up the case, overturning the Florida court’s decision and determining in a 5-4 ruling that the Gore campaign had run out of time to propose new recount plans. That ruling, which is still debated today, led to Bush winning the pivotal state by 537 votes.
