Voter turnout so far is lower than in 2020, Multnomah and Clark County officials say

One day before election day, election office employees were busy collecting incoming ballots.

  • In Multnomah County, 40 percent of ballots have been returned
  • In Clackamas County, 44 percent of ballots have been returned
  • In Washington County, 47 percent of ballots have been returned
  • In Clark County, 57 percent of ballots have been returned

On Monday, there was a long line of people outside the Clark County Elections Office, where people can register to vote until Election Day.

“We’ve never seen so many people here the day before the election on this Monday,” said Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey.

Still, he said that turnout one day before the election is lower than four years ago. “The same time, four years ago, we were at 70 percent,” he said.

In Multnomah County, elections director Tim Scott also noted lower turnout.

“Turnout is slightly lower than the last two presidential elections so far, but we still expect to reach the expected turnout of around 80 percent, which means it will be very busy for us today and tomorrow,” he said .

“The team behind me can process approximately 90,000 ballots per day. The challenge is to get our hands on all those ballots. We have to wait for the voters to return them.”

Some voters in Clark County said they hand-delivered their ballots to the elections office after the polls at Fisher’s Landing were set on fire, burning hundreds of ballots. But Kimsey says that after that incident, voters started using the ballot boxes at a faster pace than before.

“My response is that people will say that we will not allow these types of actions to take away our most important constitutional right. We will not let that get in the way of how we vote,” he said.

“Thousands and thousands of people continue to confidently use our ballot boxes, and they should be able to trust that their ballot is safe and will be counted,” Scott reiterated.

Kimsey also said law enforcement is taking future threats seriously.

“We have asked and indicated that the police presence will be significantly increased. And we have already seen that.”

And while you can still vote by mail as long as your ballot is marked by November 5, Scott doesn’t recommend it.

“I would recommend it at this point, we have 30 drop locations across the province. Drop it there. Our drivers will be there many times today and tomorrow,” he said.
