What are the swing states 2024? Why they are important

play

Voting matters in every state, but some states receive more attention in presidential years — like Pennsylvania for the 2024 race.

Most states consistently vote red or blue, like 38 states that voted for the same party over and over again between 2000 and 2016, or they visibly lean overwhelmingly in the lead-up to the election. But then there are states that distance or poll very closely, which makes them less predictable and puts them in the category of swing states or battleground states.

There has been a lot of attention on Pennsylvania because its 19 electoral votes could remain blue and go to Vice President Kamala Harris or go back to former President Donald Trump. The state helped President Joe Biden win the 2020 election after he voted for Trump in 2016.

Here’s an overview of what a swing state is, who the swing states are, and why they are important.

What is a swing state?

A swing state or battleground state is a state in which the American presidential candidates enjoy a comparable level of support between the Democratic and Republican parties and can therefore be won by either party.

Where are the swing states in the 2024 elections?

Political campaigns invest their time, money and energy heavily in the crucial battleground states to gather enough electoral votes to reach 270.

The swing states in the 2024 election were Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Why are these swing states so important?

These swing states are important because they provide a total of 93 electoral votes this year and to win the presidential election a total of 270 electoral votes are needed.

Pennsylvania has the lion’s share of the electoral votes for a swing state:

  • Arizona, 11 electoral college votes.
  • Georgia, 16 votes in the electoral college.
  • Michigan, 15 electoral college votes.
  • North Carolina, 16 electoral college votes.
  • Pennsylvania, 19 electoral college votes.
  • Wisconsin, 10 electoral college votes.
  • Nevada, 6 votes in the electoral college.
