Influencer Matt Choi banned from the New York Marathon due to e-bikes

Running influencer Matt Choi has apologized after being disqualified from the New York City Marathon and banned from future races.

The 29-year-old creator posted a video to Instagram on November 5, explaining his actions, which included two e-bike riders allowing him to film him running during the race on November 3.

“I have no excuses, period,” he said in the video. “I was selfish on Sunday when I let my brother and videographer follow me around the course on e-bikes and that had serious consequences.”

“We put other runners at risk, we influenced people who achieved their personal best times and we blocked people from getting water,” he continued. “Because the New York City Marathon was about everyone and the community, I made it about myself. And to everyone I impacted, I’m sorry.”

The New York Times reported that a video on Reddit showed Choi’s entourage riding alongside him and disrupting runners during the race. The New York Times also confirmed that New York Road Runners – the organizers of the New York Marathon and other races in the city – officially disqualified Choi’s run and banned him from future races.

In his statement, he added that “although there is an opportunity to appeal (against the ban), I am not going to do so.”

In the caption of his video, Choi also wrote: “E-bikes have no place in races. No excuses. I was selfish and take full responsibility for my actions. I apologize to all runners affected and I accept my DQ and lifetime ban Never more.”

Choi – who has more than half a million followers on TikTok and Instagram – is best known for sharing his journey as a runner and has competed in other marathons across the country. Before his time was disqualified, he shared a video on Instagram of the NYC Marathon and said he ran the race in less than three hours.

Choi was previously criticized on social media for using e-bikes to film content during the 2023 Austin Marathon. Similar to the situation in New York, his entourage during that race disrupted runners and marathon traffic while riding e-bikes to capture images content, per Running magazine.

In his video, he directly addressed his previous use of e-bikes in previous races and the reaction he received at the time, confirming: “That stops here; it won’t happen again.”
