A wild game in Kansas City was decided in the final minute today, as the Chiefs defeated the Bengals 26-25 when Harrison Butker made a 51-yard field goal just before time expired.

Butker’s field goal marked the fifth lead change of the second half in a game that was riddled with fouls, penalties and turnovers, but which ultimately turned out to be a close one.

The Chiefs are 2-0 and the Bengals are 0-2. Kansas City must be feeling very good about where it is in its bid to win a third straight Super Bowl.

One of the biggest mistakes was by Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who was assessed a costly 15-yard penalty in the fourth quarter when he yelled at the referee, thinking he was the victim of a hip-drop tackle. Replays clearly showed that Chase was at fault and the tackle was not illegal.

Joe Burrow also made a big mistake: a fumble that Chamarri Conner picked up and returned 38 yards for a touchdown.

It wasn’t all bad for the Bengals, as cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, who what nonsense talk about Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy last week, backed up his story with a spectacular one-handed interception while covering Worthy.

But ultimately, the Chiefs made one more play. Patrick Mahomes finished with mediocre numbers — 151 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions — but a late fourth-down throw in traffic resulted in a crucial pass interference penalty that put the Chiefs within striking distance of the winning field goal.

No one should write off the Bengals two weeks into the season, but the Chiefs are putting some distance between themselves and the rest of the AFC contenders. Two games into the season, they have two wins against two teams that were expected to threaten them for AFC supremacy. The Chiefs are in a good position.
