A fast-growing wildfire in the Los Angeles area is burning out of control after destroying homes and prompting evacuations northwest of Malibu.

The Mountain Fire scorched more than 14,000 acres in Ventura County, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) inland from the coastal city of Malibu, on Thursday morning, according to county fire officials. It’s one of a handful of fires that have sprung to life this week in California, which is on high alert because of an outbreak of seasonal Santa Ana winds that began flaring up this weekend.
