HFC members are doing their best to block the social security law

While all eyes were in the election, two members of the House Freedom Caucus went rogue during Tuesday’s pro forma session in an attempt to kill a widely supported Social Security bill — and ambush their leadership once again.

In a parliamentary maneuverRep. Bob Good (R-Va.) unanimously requested approval to table the Social Security Fairness Act. Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), who was the chairman, did not object. The Republican leadership of the House of Representatives had no idea that the HFC members would do this. It violates pro forma session protocol.

The bill they introduced has 330 co-sponsors and has collected enough signatures on the discharge petition to force a floor vote. HFC members grumble about the successful attempt. The legislation would repeal restrictions on Social Security benefits that government employees or their spouses can qualify for if they also have a government pension.

GOP leadership weighs up what to do next.
