PHOTOS: California mountain fire sets hills ablaze and destroys more than 100 homes

Ventura, California. – Over the past two days, the mountain fire in southern California’s Ventura County has burned more than 20,000 acres and destroyed dozens of homes.

Photos and videos from the Mountain Fire show hills on fire and surrounded by smoke as firefighters try to extinguish the flames and prevent them from spreading.

While firefighters fought on the ground, aircraft were deployed to extinguish the flames from the air.

The video below shows a helicopter dropping fire retardant over Camarillo, California, around 9:22 p.m. Wednesday as officials worked around the clock to contain the fire.

CAL Fire said fourteen helicopters were assigned to contain the fire, with a number of firefighting air tankers from across the state of California assisting.

They added that more than 2,400 personnel worked to control the Mountain Fire, including firefighters from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp.

According to the Venturay County Fire Department, more than 130 homes were destroyed Friday morning and more than 80 buildings had significant damage.

The extent of the damage could even be seen from space, as shown in the satellite images below from a NOAA satellite.

The fire started during a Santa Ana wind event, where gusts of 50 to 75 miles per hour created dangerous conditions for a fast-spreading fire.

The looping video below shows palm trees swaying in the wind as mountain fire smoke billows in the background.

Starting Friday, officials and residents will return to sites destroyed by the flames.

One of them was Brandon Francis, whose grandmother’s house in Camarillo burned down in the Mountain Fire. In the photo below, he salvages what he can from the burned remains.

The Mountain Fire is now 7% contained and the cause is under investigation, according to CAL Fire. They added that six were injured.
