New York Weather: Freeze warning issued for Suffolk County until Sunday morning

At 2:32 a.m. Saturday, a Freeze Warning was issued by the National Weather Service, valid from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday for Suffolk County.

The weather service states: “Frosting temperatures of up to 29 degrees are expected.”

“Frost and freezing conditions can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation,” the weather service describes. “Take steps now to protect vulnerable plants from the cold.”

What to do if there is a freeze alert or warning

Frost warnings are issued from May to October (but can be extended if necessary), when low temperatures are expected to reach 29-32 degrees. If there is a chance of temperatures falling within these thresholds, a freeze warning may be issued a few days in advance.

According to the weather service, there is little you can do to protect plants if a frost warning or watch is issued in your area. If you can move your tender plants indoors, do so as frost will likely kill them depending on the severity of the conditions.

Advance Local Weather Alerts is a service from United Robots, which uses machine learning to gather the latest data from the National Weather Service.
