Texas tries to secure the shutout in the first half, and Florida faces a third-and-4. The big news about that ride? Texas standout Trey Moore, the announced transfer from UTSA, gets his first sack as a Longhorn. Moore is having a monstrous first half with three solo tackles and two tackles for loss.

Texas makes a big play on a small swing pass to RB Quintrevion Wisner, who races 50 yards for the score. Great downfield block from Kelvin Banks Jr.’s tackle. and guard Cole Huston, and that play seemed like it came straight off the practice field. Excellent concept, excellent execution. 5:54 2Q: Texas 21, Florida 0

Florida takes advantage of a short field and reaches the Texas 7-yard line. Will they go for it on fourth and second? No, and after a penalty pushes the Gators back five yards, kicker Trey Smack III misses a 30-yarder. Scared money doesn’t make money, says a press box.

Texas dominated from the opening kickoff with 150 yards of offense, compared to just 43 yards for Florida. Unless the Longhorns turn the ball over or give up some points, Texas fans should feel very comfortable all day on this beautiful fall afternoon.

It won’t be long before Texas scores on the takeaway. Texdas QB Quinn Ewers finds his favorite target in tight end Gunnar Helm for a 22-yard touchdown pass, and the Longhorns are off to the races.

Texas’ defense makes a big play. Anthony Hill Jr. rips the ball loose from Florida RB Ja’Kobi Jackson, and Trey Moore picks it up and fumbles inside the 10-yard line. A block in the back pushes Texas back, but the Longhorns are still on the 22-yard line.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian rolls the dice early and it helps lead to a 29-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Ewers to Matthew Golden. Texas narrowly converted a fourth-and-1 from its own 30-yard line, but then quickly advanced down the field on a 44-yard run from receiver Isaiah Bond. A well-designed play left Golden wide open for the score.

A promising first drive for Texas fizzled after a tackle for loss and a sack, two bugbears for the Longhorns’ offense in recent weeks. Bert Auburn then misses wide right on a 51-yard field goal attempt. The Gators take over with Aidan Warner starting behind center.

Texas Football welcomes back two starters in safety Andrew Mukuba and receiver Isaiah Bond. Mukuba, a Clemson transfer who graduated from LBJ High School in Austin, injured his knee during Texas’ 30-15 loss to Georgia and was out for the team’s win over Vanderbilt two weeks ago. Mukuba has had a pair of interceptions this season and has broken up three more passes, with a total of 25 tackles.

Bond, who was Texas’ leading receiver before missing last week’s game, has 380 yards receiving and four touchdowns this season.

Texas football will be without defensive end Colton Vasek when it plays Florida on Saturday. The redshirt freshman was listed as questionable earlier this week but was downgraded to ruled out based on the SEC-mandated availability report filed by Texas on Friday. Texas has not publicly disclosed the injury hampering Vasek.

Vasek, a product of Westlake High School, has emerged to give the Longhorns some quality depth in his second season on campus. He has six total tackles to go with two sacks, getting to the quarterback against UTSA and Mississippi State.

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, a five-star freshman from the far-flung Houston suburb of Willis, remains a game-time decision for Saturday’s game at No. 5 Texas, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Regardless of whether he plays, Lagway is not expected to make a significant contribution, Thamel said.

Lagway was taken off the field in the first half of last weekend’s loss to Georgia after suffering a hamstring injury. He later returned to the sidelines with his legs wrapped and using crutches.

Sources told ESPN that Lagway will warm up with the Gators. The freshman has thrown for 1,071 yards on 56-of-92 passing for six touchdowns and has rushed for another 114 yards.

If Lagway can’t play, walk-on Aidan Warner will likely start for the Gators.

Texas vs. Florida Predictions

Texas 27, Florida 13

DEFENSE IS DOING ENOUGH

The injury-plagued Gators’ offense lacks power, but Florida does have an athletic defense that looks a bit like Georgia. It may not always be pretty, but Texas remains on track for the SEC title game.

CONNECTED GATORS HAVE NO BITE

The Gators are a different bunch of reptiles when QB DJ Lagway plays, but the bet is he won’t be anywhere near his optimal level if he dresses. The Horns will look to play their best offensive game in quite some time and avoid the upset bug in the final crucial three weeks.

BIG WIN, BIG IMPRESSION

The CFP rankings are out and now it’s time to impress voters. Beating Florida alone won’t do that. Texas needs to win this one convincingly, and the Longhorns will do just that.

NO DJ, NO DANCE

If Lagway doesn’t play, the Longhorns can navigate this game on autopilot. If he does, the Gators will be just talented enough to hang with Texas for a while if the Longhorns are slow coming out of their bye week.
