Cowboys trying to pick Eagles

ARLINGTON, Texas – There was no need (or way) to mitigate the situation for the Dallas Cowboys entering their first game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles. Since they were 3-5 this year and had not won a game at AT&T Stadium in their first three home games, the mission was as simple and clear as could have been:

Beat the Eagles to break their three-home losing streak while climbing back within one game of the .500 mark — a win against Philly will also be weighted more heavily than a division win.

But winning a game after four fumbles is a tall order, especially in the NFL, and those giveaways all but cratered what was a great defensive outing, at least until time of possession started to wear that unit down.

So when naming the gamebreakers for week 10, it’s not a problem that it consists entirely of names on that side of the ball.

With each passing week, Overshown continues to turn up the volume on what is shaping up to be a breakout season for the former third-round pick. He flew out of the gate in his NFL debut in Week 1 and graduated to demon time in Week 10 against Jalen Hurts and the Eagles. Overshown recorded nine tackles and two sacks… before halftime …almost adding a third sack that was narrowly avoided by Hurts to end the first half with an Eagles touchdown. It was a coming out party for Overshown, whose future is bright enough to scorch your corneas.

You probably wouldn’t know it from looking at what he did against the Eagles, but Parsons hadn’t flopped since September. However, that didn’t stop the all-world edge rusher from making his presence felt as Philadelphia flew into town. Parsons brought down Hurts for two sacks in the first two quarters and one of them forced a fumble that was recovered by Marist Liufau at the Eagles’ six-yard line, acting as a takedown button for Ezekiel Elliott’s lost red zone fumble during the previous action. Hungry for a win, and for some game action, the lion was on the prowl.

If there’s one thing Diggs likes to do, it’s taking the ball. This is especially true when it’s the Eagles who fall victim to his talents, as proven once again this time. When Hurts, who had to pay several times in his career when targeting Diggs, dropped back to the Cowboys’ 12-yard line on 1st-and-10 to try to give the Eagles a 14-3 lead, it was Diggs. looking for the interception in the end zone – his first since Week 1 and fifth of his career against Philly. The offense didn’t reward him for it, but he did his job, and then some.

Overshown wasn’t the only starting linebacker to impact the game. Liufau, as mentioned, left his mark when he recovered Parsons’ fumble to give the Cowboys sensational field position in a 7-3 game. The Cowboys could only score a field goal after that, but Liufau did his best to get them as close to the goal line as possible. It also served as the first lesson of Liufau’s young NFL career and if he continues to trend upward, the Cowboys duo at LB could be a problem for opposing offenses for years to come.

The tone was set early on in this one by the Cowboys’ defense. For weeks, the unit has struggled mightily to get off to a fast start and it has helped (a starved offense) push Dallas in the wrong direction in the win-loss column. That wasn’t the case against the Eagles, however, as Odighizuwa was someone who made things difficult for Hurts and Co. early on; and that includes running into Carl Lawson on the Eagles’ opening drive, allowing Overshown to get a sack to force a punt. And he also played a key role in keeping an eye on Saquon Barkley.

For the second straight game, Lawson earned his way to the opposing quarterback. He followed up his two-sack performance against the Falcons in Atlanta with a shared sack with Odighizuwa against the Eagles. Even with Parsons’ return, Lawson found a way to be effective at a high level. Lawson was acquired to provide a stabilizing veteran presence on the edge and insurance against injuries. Lawson is fulfilling his one-year contract.
