Marco Angulo, FC Cincinnati midfielder who played for LDU Quito, has died

Marco Angulo, the FC Cincinnati midfielder who played for an Ecuadorian club this season as part of a loan deal, has died.

LDU Quito, the club that the 22-year-old Angulo played for in 2024 to further his development, confirmed his death late Monday in a social media post from his official account on “X”.

The post did not specify Angulo’s exact cause of death, but he had been receiving treatment for more than a month following a car crash in October that killed another passenger.

Current FC Cincinnati players began posting tributes to Angulo via social media on Tuesday.

“It is with deep pain and sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito officials stated in their social media image. “We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”

FC Cincinnati acquired Angulo from Ecuadorian side Independiente ahead of the 2023 season as one of the best available defensive midfielders in South America. The following season, Angulo saw mixed results on the field and minutes at FCC. This year he was loaned to LDU Quito, one of Ecuador’s top soccer clubs, where it was hoped he could earn playing time that would not have been available at Cincinnati.

Angulo then had more mixed results on the pitch in Quito, but FC Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright remained positive about Angulo’s potential. Albright indicated during a press conference in August that it was possible Angulo could return to play against FC Cincinnati, even though LDU Quito had the option to acquire him permanently after the loan period expired later this year.

Albright reiterated during several public comments about Angulo, including in a spring interview with The Enquirer, that the 22-year-old player was still young and still developing.

“He’s playing some. Still a very young player,” Albright said in August. “With him we will evaluate at the end of the year: ‘Is this a player we bring back into our lineup?’ But we are constantly monitoring these guys and following their games. We have guys assigned to that, so we are aware.”

FC Cincinnati officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday. The Enquirer will update this story.
