Discount retailer Family Dollar has been hit by yet another store closure in Ohio. This is in addition to the other 35 locations the company announced earlier this year as it struggled to meet market expectations.

Family Dollar’s Dayton location at 1130 N. Main St. will close on Nov. 23, according to the Dayton Daily News. The store closure will exacerbate the area’s already limited shopping options, customers told the publications, as the Dayton location offers final sales and discounts in its final weeks of being open.

Why are Family Dollar stores closing?

Family Dollar, which bought Dollar Tree in 2015, is considered an underperformer, according to USA TODAY reports.

In a Nov. 4 press release, Dollar Tree noted that the company is exploring, among other things, the sale of Family Dollar. “The Family Dollar business segment…could include a potential sale, spin-off or other disposition of the business,” the statement reads.

In March 2024, Family Dollar announced plans to close 1,000 stores. The company pointed to inflation, a shift in consumer spending and safety concerns all contributing to lower sales and earnings that fell below expectations.

The dwindling locations began hitting Ohio around April, when Family Dollar announced it would lay off some or all of the 265 employees who work at those locations on or around April 20.

The chain will also close more than 300 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores in the coming years, according to an April 2024 company press release.

How many Family Dollar locations are still open in Ohio?

There are 7,748 Family Dollar locations in the U.S. and 415 in Ohio (down from the more than 450 stores reported in April), according to data scraping site ScrapeHero.

According to the chain’s store locator, Family Dollar currently operates dozens of stores in Ohio, including 20 in Cincinnati, 25 stores in Cleveland, 23 locations in Columbus, nine in Akron and six in Canton.
