Social Security changes: Some will get payments on November 2; The COLA increase could begin in December

Some Social Security recipients will see different payment schedules due to changes in the calendar for the rest of the year.

In November, traditional Social Security payments are sent on fixed dates: people born November 1-10 receive benefits on the second Wednesday (November 13); born 11-20th on the third Wednesday (November 20); and 21 and 31 on the fourth Wednesday (November 27).

That schedule changes for December due to the Christmas holidays.

Second and third Wednesday payments will be delivered as scheduled, but fourth Wednesday recipients will receive their benefits a day early on December 24, as December 25 is a federal holiday.

The biggest changes come for people who receive Supplemental Security Income. SSI recipients will receive two payments in November: the first on the regular date of November 1 and the second on November 29, since December 1 falls on a Sunday.

In December, SSI recipients receive their payments one day early – December 31 – because January 1 is New Year’s Day. These checks will reflect two different amounts because the 2025 cost of living adjustment increase will apply to the payment made on December 31.

The maximum SSI payment in 2024 is $943 for singles and $1,415 for couples. That will rise to $967 for singles and $1,450 for couples by 2025.

About 72.5 million beneficiaries – 69 million Social Security recipients and 7.5 million SSI recipients and some receiving both – will receive a 2.5% benefit increase for 2025.

The increase is lower than the 3.2% beneficiaries received in 2024, but close to the historical norm of 2.6% received over the past two decades. During that time, COLAS ranged from just 0 in 2010, 2011 and 2016 to 8.7% in 2023.

The 2.5% increase means the average beneficiary receiving $1,870 per month will see an increase of about $46.80 next year.
