Oregon mother wakes up from a nap to find her 5-year-old missing, police say

Authorities in Oregon say a mother woke up from a nap this weekend to find her 5-year-old son missing.

Joshua James McCoy, who has autism, was last seen at his home on Stage Road in Hauser on Saturday, November 9, according to a missing persons bulletin issued by the Coos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

The sheriff’s office said the child’s mother took a nap around 1 p.m. local time and woke up around 5:30 p.m. to find Joshua missing.

Authorities revealed that “some clues were found” early in the search for Joshua, but noted that “nothing definitive” had been found.

“Nothing has been ruled out at this time as we consider all possible avenues,” the CCSO said in a statement on Monday, November 11. “We remain hopeful that Joshua will be found alive and well.”

According to the missing persons bulletin, Joshua is estimated to be approximately 6 feet tall and weigh between 50 and 60 pounds. He has brown, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes.

The child is said to respond to “Josh” or “Joshie”, although he “may not respond when called upon.”

CORSAR, a search and rescue effort between seven counties in Oregon and California, is assisting in the search for Joshua and providing 61 ground crews, air support and K-9 resources, according to the department.

The sheriff’s office “has also requested assistance from state and federal agencies” and expects additional resources to arrive on Tuesday, November 12.

“Almost always the person is found within 1,000 feet of the last known location, and we’ve already gone well past the 1,000-foot mark,” said Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio, according to CBS affiliate KPIC.

Authorities are asking citizens not to search for Joshua in the area themselves at this time.

“The concern is that evidence would be missed or contaminated if there were an overwhelming number of personnel on scene,” the Coos County Sheriff’s Office explained in their statement.

The department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
