Today’s ‘Wordle’ #1243 Hints, clues and answers for Wednesday, November 13

ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1242 Hints, clues and answers for Tuesday, November 12

Wednesday is named after the god Odin, the All-Father. The word in French is Mercredi and in Spanish Miercoles. In Italian it is Mercoledì. These are named after the Roman god Mercury. Both Odin and Mercury are gods of intellect and deceit – think ‘quicksilver’ – and both are seen as cunning.

Interestingly, Wednesday in Portuguese is Quartafeira, or ‘fourth fair’, a word that completely abandons pagan gods. Perhaps it is more interesting that so many days remain dedicated to pagan gods, given the enormous influence of Christianity on every aspect of life. Except for Saturday (Sabado) and Sunday (Domingo), every day of the week in Portuguese is named after a number rather than a god.

It’s Wordle Wednesday, here’s your riddle:

“We see without eyes and fly on dark wings,

Gaining knowledge of farmers and kings.

We serve the All-Father with news from afar,

If you know his name, you know who we are.”

If you discover this, let me know! I will post the answer tomorrow.

At least we have a Wordle to solve. Let’s do it!

Word analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot here.

Well, not so bad, considering how tricky this word is. CRATE is a solid opener on any day and left me with just 60 words today. PROUD reduced that to four, but unfortunately that was still too many to tie this into gamble #3. However, PRISM left me with only one solution: PRIMP for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

Laundry today. I get 0 points for guessing four points and 0 points for tying the Bot. Big zero!

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent, you get 1 point. In case of a draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or play for a new score every day.
  • Friday is 2XP, which means you double your points: positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Contemporary Wordle Etymology

The word fine probably originated in the early 19th century as a mixture of fine (meaning ‘neat’ or ‘appropriate’) and smooth out (meaning “to carefully tidy or arrange, especially one’s appearance”). It was developed in English to describe the act of making minor adjustments or improvements to one’s appearance, often with an element of self-conscious attention to detail.
