New Mexico State women’s basketball: Aggies lose first game of 2024-2025 season to UTSA

New Mexico State (2-1) fell at home against UTSA (2-1) on Thursday evening. It was the first of a doubleheader at the Pan American Center, with the Aggies men’s team following up against Texas A&M Corpus-Christi.

The Roadrunners took control in the first quarter with a 25-16 lead after the first 10 minutes. UTSA largely maintained this control in the second quarter, taking a 39-33 halftime advantage into the locker room. Both teams scored 17 points in the third quarter before the Roadrunners pulled away in the fourth quarter to win by double digits. NM State failed to score in the final 2:34 of the game.

UTSA forward Jordyn Jenkins was a thorn in the Aggies’ side, scoring more than a third of the Roadrunners’ points with 27 on 9-for-14 shooting. Graduate student guard Molly Kaiser led NM State with 23 points, with senior forward Fanta Gassama the only other Aggie to score in double figures with 11 points.

Both teams shot almost identically from the floor, with the Roadrunners shooting 45% and NM State shooting 44.4%. Three-point shooting made the difference, with UTSA going 50% from beyond the arc and the Aggies going 33.3% from the same distance.

The Aggies stay home next Wednesday for their upcoming game against Western New Mexico (0-3). The turn-off is at 6:00 PM
