Anthony Davis talks about playing against rookie standout Zach Edey

Zach Edey of the Memphis Grizzlies is one of the most intriguing rookies in the NBA this season. He’s an immovable object in the paint at 6-foot-4 and 305 pounds, and while he doesn’t put up particularly impressive stats, he’s one of the favorites to win the Rookie of the Year award.

Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers have already gotten up close and personal with Edey twice this season. On November 6, Edey had eight points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes as Memphis blew out the Lakers, and on Wednesday he recorded 12 points and eight rebounds while blocking one of Davis’ shots in a 128–123 Lakers victory.

Davis acknowledged that competing against Edey is a challenge, especially defensively and at the plate.

“He’s a big body,” Davis said of Edey. “He’s 6-foot-4. Any time you have a guy like that, it increases your awareness, especially on rebounding. He made a couple of shots over me.”

Edey had an excellent college career in his four years at Purdue University. He averaged 25.2 points on 62.3% field goal shooting, 12.2 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots per game, and he led the nation in scoring while being named the National College Player of the Year for the second straight season the year.

Davis will face an even tougher challenge on Friday when the Lakers visit the San Antonio Spurs, meaning he will face Victor Wembanyama, who scored 50 points on Wednesday.

“And then you go against another guy at Wemby on Friday,” Davis added. “These guys are extremely tall, so you definitely have to work a little early to get him out. But Edey will be a good player in the league.” this competition for sure.”

The Lakers are 7-4 overall and remain undefeated at home, but they are just 1-4 on the road. Finding a way to finish above .500 on the road this season will be a significant factor in whether they ultimately make the playoffs.
