Michigan State football in Illinois

Illini TD puts MSU in a hole

An Illini fumble set up a third-and-10 at midfield, but MSU allowed a huge pass that put Illinois in the red zone. Then McCray punched in a touchdown run from the one. 31-16 with 7:30 to play, need to score time.

There is again nothing to do for Spartans

This game has become a brawl. MSU is playing with fire right now. The field position battle is won by Illinois, and the offense doesn’t change much. However, sticking to the kick return will help. 12:46 to play.

Fourth three and out

Wow, that’s big from the defense. This time with a short field, MSU forces Illinois into a fourth-and-5 as the third quarter clock reaches triple zero. We’ll see if Illinois goes for it after the break, I’d be surprised if they do.

No first downs for the offense

After an empty disk we reset. Nothing was done on that run, but Montorie Foster narrowly missed a big third down conversion. Time for defense to stand up again.

Defense Forces third three and out

Enormous. Now it’s time for Chiles and the O to reach this level. Let’s see if they can make it happen.

Same score if Illinois takes over

It’s getting late here. The defense can’t allow a touchdown here or the margin for error becomes very small. Even a field goal puts the Spartans far behind. A huge drive comes in.

Illinois gets FG back, 24-16

Good stuff from the defense to keep the Illini out of the end zone, but the lead is back to eight. It’s a one-possession game though, let’s see what the offense can do.

Touchdown, MSU!

What a ride. MSU takes advantage on the first possession of the half by converting two fourth downs en route to a touchdown. The score was a fourth-and-2 pass from Chiles to Nate Carter. 9:35 remaining in the third quarter. Great opportunity for the defense here.

Peace has arrived

MSU gets the ball to start the second half, and with some momentum. The offense hasn’t turned the ball over, but is trailing by two points in the final 30 minutes.

Spartans get three back, 21-9

That’s a start. Chiles has been on a rampage today, getting up to 57 yards on the ground, but a few mistakes as the field narrowed prevented the Spartans from getting six. Kim hit a field goal home.

The lead is extended to 21-6

Well, this is rough. Last week, Indiana was legitimately better than Michigan State. According to oddsmakers, there was a two-point spread this week. Michigan State will have to figure out something quickly to get back into this.

Illinois ball after questionable PI

Michigan State had a first down that seemed to get the drive going, but Nick Marsh was called for directing the pick play. Tough decision, but it was 50/50. The Illini regain possession.

The offense takes the upper hand again

A nice stop for the Spartans, and the offense will take over again.

Spartan’s drive stalls, Illinois ball

MSU had a first-and-10 right at midfield, but gained no more ground and punted the ball away. Kick-catch interference moves Illinois to its own 30.

Another score extends Illinois’ lead

That was a tough task. Illinois went backwards and found itself in a third-and-16 situation. The Illini converted and then went all the way to the end zone on a touchdown run by Josh McCray. MSU’s sack drought continues.

Touchdown, MSU!

Wow! Chiles used his legs on third down to run for the first and extend the drive, then found Aziah Johnson for a 52-yard score. Jonathan Kim missed the PAT, so it’s 7-6 Illinois.

Illini hit a deep bomb to take a 7-0 lead

Altmyer found Pat Bryant 57 yards to open the scoring midway through the first quarter. Sloppy second shot from the Michigan State defense from the very beginning, and with star cornerback Charles Brantley sidelined today, the deep ball could be an issue.

Crisis averted; Illinois takes over

On the first play of the scrimmage, Chiles appeared to lose the ball and saw Illinois give it back for a score. After assessment it was determined that he was down. The Spartans then got close to midfield, but could not get any further. We remain goalless.

Three and out start for Spartans D

Nice position to start the day. Montorie Foster with a nice little return and the attack is nicely set up. Aidan Chiles trots onto the field from his injury. Good sign.

Away, let’s go!

Illinois ball first. MSU differed. Football time.

Foreplay

Michigan State opens its home season with a trip to Illinois.

The Spartans are coming off a well-timed bye week after a loss to Indiana left its mark on the injury report. Quarterback Aidan Chiles was among those to leave the game due to injury, but all signs point to him being ready for Saturday’s game.

The loss to Indiana dropped the Spartans’ record to 4-5. In Year 1 of Jonathan Smith’s tenure, many had the goal of making a bowl game. For Michigan State to become bowl eligible, it must win two of its remaining three games.

Illinois is 6-3 and fell out of the top 25 after a home loss to Minnesota on Nov. 2. The Fighting Illini’s 3-3 record in Big Ten play puts them one game ahead of Michigan State, who is 2-4. a busy middle of the conference.

This is a prime opportunity for Michigan State to steal one along the way in its quest for a berth.
