Kings’ De’Aaron Fox scores franchise-record 60 points in OT loss

When De’Aaron Fox saw that he had 48 points in the fourth quarter in the Sacramento Kings’ 130-126 overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, teammate Malik Monk told him, “You might as well get 60 points.”

The Kings guard had 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to finish with a franchise record 60 points, besting Jack Twyman’s 59 points for the Cincinnati Royals in 1960 and DeMarcus Cousins’ 56-point performance in 2016 , the highest number since the competition. franchise moved from Kansas City, Missouri, to Sacramento in 1985.

Twyman’s total was the longest-standing single-game franchise record in the NBA. Now that Fox has broken the milestone, the new longest-standing single-game franchise record for points is set by Bob Pettit in 1961, who, along with Dominique Wilkins and Lou Hudson, holds the Hawks record.

“I already knew I was nice, so I wouldn’t really say that,” Fox said when asked if he had learned anything about himself.

Fox shot 22-of-35 from the field, made 6-of-10 from distance and was 10-of-11 on free throws. He had 21 points at halftime and looked to rally the Kings from a 20-point deficit in the second half as he sparked a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

“I wanted this game to end in the fourth quarter, so I don’t even want to get a chance to (get 60 points), but obviously my teammates wanted me to keep going,” Fox said.

Kings coach Mike Brown said Fox took on the job since Monk and DeMar DeRozan were both injured.

“He knew we needed help, and he put us on his back and almost carried us to the finish,” Brown said. “He did everything he could and it was a spectacular performance from him.”

Fox had the first 60-point game in the NBA this season. Keegan Murray said it was a little difficult to find the balance between getting the ball for Fox and running the team’s offense, but he felt the Kings “did a good job of figuring out how to play when he was hot today.”

“If he’s aggressive all the time, he’s extremely difficult to stop,” Murray said. “I think that was just a representation of him being aggressive all game. And that’s what he’s capable of.”

Fox went shot for shot with the Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, with Edwards’ 36 points leading Minnesota to a resilient victory.

“Obviously, at the end of the day, that kind of performance, that kind of achievement is nothing to just think about and let go. It’s definitely cool.”

“I always felt like he was underrated, underappreciated by everyone,” Edwards said on the Timberwolves television broadcast. “And he showed us today who he is. To me, he’s one of the best point guards in the league, and he showed that.”

“That’s what you love about the game: the two best players on the floor going against each other, so that was fun.”

Since the start of last season, eight games with 60 points have been played. During that period, teams are 3-5 if a player scores 60 or more.

Fox, who has made just one All-Star team despite averaging more than 21 points in eight seasons, said even in defeat he still enjoys his performance.

“Obviously, at the end of the day, that kind of performance, that kind of achievement is nothing to just think about and let go,” Fox said. “It’s definitely cool.”

Of Fox’s 22 shots made, 21 were unassisted. That’s tied for the second-most unassisted field goals in a game in the last 25 years, trailing only Portland’s Andre Miller in 2010 against Dallas (22).
