Weeks before the Atlantic hurricane season ends, Tropical Storm Sara neared landfall along the coast of Belize. This weekend the storm caused heavy rainfall in Honduras.

The latest storm of the Atlantic hurricane season brought heavy rainfall as it moved inland over parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Experts there warned of heavy rainfall with life-threatening flooding and mudslides for parts of Central America.

At 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 17, Tropical Storm Sara was located 60 miles south-southeast of Belize City with maximum sustained winds of 60 km per hour. The storm was moving west-northwest at a speed of 5 miles per hour.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 each year, with the busiest part of the season running from August to October. After Sara, the next named storm would be Tony (see below).

Where is Tropical Storm Sara?

A tropical storm warning was in effect for:

  • The northern coast of Honduras, from Punta Castilla west to the Honduras-Guatemala border
  • The Bay Islands of Honduras
  • The Caribbean Sea coast of Guatemala
  • The coast of Belize
  • The coast of Mexico from Puerto Costa Maya south to Chetumal

A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area.

Interests elsewhere in the Yucatán Peninsula should keep an eye on the progress of this system.

At 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 17, the center of Tropical Storm Sara was moving toward the west-northwest at a speed of approximately 5 miles per hour and this general motion with some increase in forward speed was expected through this evening. Sara’s center is forecast to make landfall in Belize later this morning or around noon.

Maximum sustained winds were near 40 km per hour with higher gusts. Only minor fluctuations in strength are expected until landfall. A weakening was forecast after the storm moved inland, with a weakening over the southern part of the Yucatan Peninsula expected this evening or Monday.

Tropical storm force winds extend as far as 110 miles (170 kilometers) from the center.

Dangers affecting the land

Rainfall: Rainfall amounts of 6 to 25 inches are expected through early next week, with isolated storms expected to total about 40 inches over northern Honduras. These rainfalls will lead to widespread areas of life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flooding and mudslides, especially along and near the Sierra La Esperanza.

Elsewhere in the rest of Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala, western Nicaragua and the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, Tropical Storm Sara is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain through early next week with local totals around 6 inches. This will result in areas of flash flooding, which may be significant, along with the possibility of mudslides.

Wind: Tropical storm conditions, mainly gusty winds, are expected in the warning area over the next few hours in parts of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

Storm surge: A storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above ground level near and north of where downtown Sara intersects the Belize coast. Near the coast the wave will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.
