Jayson Tatum reacts to Grant Williams’ hard foul after Celtics win

Jayson Tatum wasted no time leaving the stage at the Spectrum Center on Saturday night after the Celtics put the finishing touches on a 113-103 win over the Hornets. All eyes were on the All-Star after he was bulldozed by former teammate Grant Williams for a blatant 2 foul in the closing moments of Friday’s win.

Williams was sent off for the foul, making Saturday night the first chance for the two to come into contact publicly after the cheap shot on the boundary. Still, Tatum declined to greet his former teammate on the field and maintained that mentality while speaking to reporters in Charlotte’s postgame.

Tatum, who scored 29 points in the win, did not speak to reporters after the call Friday evening. When Tatum was asked to speak about the situation Saturday night, he sidestepped Williams’ question.

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” Tatum told reporters in Charlotte through Kayla Burton. “We were ready for the game today, we came to Charlotte and did what we had to do. We’re going to Atlanta to try to get one more win before we go home.

Williams and Tatum reportedly did speak after Friday’s interaction, according to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. However, Tatum denied there was any added fuel in Saturday’s match that could exact any form of revenge on his former teammate.

“I never make it about one person,” Tatum said. “I understand who I am in this league and I’m going to come out and play the right way. It’s not about a matchup or anything. Just come out, try to dominate, give my team the best chance to win and play the right way, whether that’s scoring, rebounding or screening other guys. The goal is to give us the best chance to win, so it’s not about situations or other people.”

After the hard foul, Tatum was also praised by Joe Mazzulla for the way he handled the situation at the time.

“I’m glad (Tatum) is doing well,” Mazzulla said. “What I like most is how he immediately jumped up, didn’t stay down, it didn’t really faze him. He just got up, went to the foul line and did his business. …To get hit like that, jump right back up, it’s a big time.

Tatum has been a model of consistency for the Celtics through seven games all year, averaging a team-best 30.3 points on 48.2 percent shooting from the field. It’s clear he intends not to let Williams’ struggles disrupt his mentality and on that front he succeeded with a team-high 29 points in Saturday’s win.
