Crews battle the fire at a royal manufacturing company

Crews battled a major fire at a manufacturing plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Tuesday, local officials said.

Several photos of a large plume of black smoke circulated online and appeared to show clouds emanating from the fire site near the Arkansas River.

As of 11:20 a.m. local time, the Tulsa Fire Department asked people to avoid the area.

Fire department spokesman Andrew Little said the fire is at Royal, a manufacturing company, and crews are fighting the blaze at a petroleum tank farm.

No injuries have been reported so far, Little said.

“Firefighters have made great progress and continue to work to extinguish the fire,” Little told USA TODAY just before 11:40 a.m. local time.

According to the company’s website, Royal is a “leading manufacturer and marketer of lubricants and greases made in the United States.” The company produces hundreds of different types of lubricating oils and greases using “biodegradable, synthetic and mineral base oils for all types of applications including; mining, construction, oil and natural gas, steel mills, marine, industrial, agriculture and transportation.”

Royal was acquired by Axel Christiernsson in 2018.

Firefighters reported closing Charles Page Boulevard between South Gilcrease Museum Road and South 33rd West Avenue. “Find alternate routes of travel as firefighters work to contain the fire,” the department posted on social media.

Little said no injuries had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

USA TODAY has contacted the Tulsa Police Department for more information.
