Spurs reign Victor Wembanyama (knee) Tuesday vs. Thunder

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs gave Victor Wembanyama the day off Monday before he was officially listed for Tuesday’s NBA Cup game against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of a right knee contusion.

The club initially said after training on Monday that it would consider Wembanyama doubtful, before making him doubtful on the official injury report later that day.

Spurs provided an updated injury report on Tuesday with the 20-year-old listed as out.

Wembanyama missed Saturday’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

“Kind of beat up right now,” he said the night he suffered the injury. “I took a big hit. It’s just a hit. I didn’t twist anything. This isn’t a big deal.”

San Antonio guard Devin Vassell is also out for the NBA Cup game with a sore left knee. He missed the first nine games of the season after offseason surgery to repair a stress fracture in the third metatarsal of his right foot. After playing four straight games, Vassell had to sit out Saturday’s game with a sore knee unrelated to his foot surgery.

“The foot is doing great,” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said. ‘It’s just a bump in his knee. We are being conservative, as we have been all month.”

Wembanyama’s injury came with 6:41 left in a loss Friday to the Los Angeles Lakers while guarding Anthony Davis on a drive to the basket. The players hit their right knee during the collision, causing Wembanyama to fall to the ground.

Wembanyama was whistled for a foul on the play and immediately dropped out before walking to the dressing room. Davis stayed in the game and made one of the two free throws. Wembanyama appeared hobbled away from his post-game media availability that evening.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, has made 24 three-pointers, which is the most over a four-game span in Spurs history. Wembanyama is currently averaging 22.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 1.3 steals.
