NBA championship-winning coach praises JJ Redick’s offense

While the Los Angeles Lakers played well late last season and ranked highly in a few offensive categories during that stretch, overall they weren’t exactly an outstanding offensive team. They could get out and run as well as any team in the NBA, but their half-court offense lacked movement and often devolved into LeBron James or Anthony Davis isolated on one side as their teammates stood and watched.

But so far this season has been a different story. They are off to a 9-4 start and are currently on a five-game winning streak, and through Sunday they rank eighth in points per game, seventh in field goal percentage, sixth in fast-break points and points in the paint per game. game and fifth in offensive rating. New head coach JJ Redick’s offense is far more complicated and imaginative, not to mention more organized, than the Lakers’ offense under his predecessor Darvin Ham.

The team defeated the Phoenix Suns in their second game of the season, giving Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer a good look at what has changed for LA this year. Budenholzer credited Redick for what he brought to the Purple and Gold.

Via ESPN:

“Their execution stands out to me,” said Budenholzer, whose team has played LA twice in the preseason and already twice in the regular season. “The strength with which they cut, screen and play. (Anthony) Davis brings a lot to both ends of the court. So I think that’s a reflection of JJ as a coach, and I’m sure his staff. The Players take clear what they are working on in practice and apply it.”

Davis, in particular, has benefited from Redick’s new system. He has scored more than 30 points in eight of his twelve games, and overall he is averaging 31.1 points on 56.1% shooting plus 11.2 rebounds per game, and he is attempting 10.8 free throws per game , which is easily the best of his career. His three-point shooting, which has been missing from action for a few years, has even returned: he’s shooting 42.9% from downtown so far this season.

With a 104-99 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday, the Lakers moved past Budenholzer’s Suns in the standings and into fourth place in the Western Conference.
