Reddit is offline – live updates on the massive outage

Refresh

Reddit’s last public response to the outage was on X (formerly Twitter) in response to someone asking about Reddit being down. They posted: “We’re working on it.”

Maybe we spoke too soon. As of 5:00 PM ET, Reddit’s homepage was once again mostly empty. The error message at the top is now the most interesting thing to read. Reddit hasn’t updated its status report since 3:38 PM ET.

Reddit’s popular section remains largely offline, and while the other subreddits are live, Reddit’s response time is quite slow when you click on one of them. This is still not the Reddit you know and love.

If Down Detector is any measure, Reddit appears to be recovering. Things are clearly not out of the woods yet and Reddit’s status page has yet to show an update, but all signs point to an imminent return to normal up-and-down voting on Reddit.

Some parts of Reddit seem to perform normally, except for this annoying error banner that appears at the top of almost every page. It’s yet another sign that all is not well in Reddit Land.

Even upstart social media platform Bluesky was paying attention, though it too suffered a series of minor glitches on Wednesday. There is no evidence that they are connected. Bluesky continues to decline due to its sudden and almost unprecedented popularity.

As is usually the case, people on other social media platforms are enjoying a little gloating about Reddit’s ongoing problems.

Even though the add a new Reddit post feature appears, the system still reports multiple errors and ultimately nothing is posted. I think all those anxious Reddit users should take to Discord to post updates.

As of 4:36 PM ET, Reddit’s homepage failed again. Clearly, the problem, whatever it is, is so important that Reddit’s developers are probably playing a game of whackamole with critical failures.

While Reddit’s homepage appears somewhat functional, Reddit’s own status checker reports reduced performance for most of its services. No word yet on the cause of the problems. and yes, ‘popular’ remains offline.

Today, perhaps coincidentally, was also the day of US News Anchor Katie Couric’s first-ever Reddit AMA. It launched at 2pm ET, although we’re not pointing fingers.

On the plus side, you can still view part of Reddit’s homepage.

Some pages, like the all-important Popular, remain blank.

Reddit appeared to recover at 4:13 p.m., but instability remains.
