Heartbreaking bodycam footage of Laken Riley’s family finding out she was murdered played in court as killer is sentenced to life without parole

The family of slain nursing student Laken Riley is overwhelmed with grief after learning of her death in a heartbreaking police bodycam video played Wednesday before the sentencing of her killer, Jose Ibarra.

The clip begins with the family’s black pickup truck parked haphazardly on the side of the road as they approach a group of police officers.

“It’s my daughter,” her mother, Allyson Phillips, repeats as she bursts into tears before collapsing at the side of the road, overcome with grief.

Her stepfather John Phillips and sister Lauren, who were in the truck with Allyson, also begin sobbing and begin frantically pacing the area, clearly unable to process what was happening.

Lauren crouches next to her mother, who can barely control herself.

As Allyson begins to hyperventilate and grabs a nearby officer’s bicep, barely suppressing a moan, “Is she still alive?”

When the officer tells her he can’t tell her, she falls back into the grip, grabbing her face with both hands before rolling completely limp onto her side, knowing in her heart that her world has been shattered.

“That’s what they endured, and that’s what it was like the day they came here looking for their daughter,” prosecutor Sheila Ross said after showing the heartbreaking 60-second video, which the family screamed in court as they watched.

After watching the clip and hearing impact statements from several of Riley’s friends and family, Judge Patrick Haggard sentenced Ibarra to life in prison without parole for the brutal 2024 murder.
