Snowfall is expected for central New York this evening

The first winter storm of the season is here and will likely bring wet, heavy snow to the higher elevations tonight through Friday afternoon.

The low pressure system along the East Coast will move through the region tonight, bringing a mix of rain and snow to Syracuse. After about 9 p.m., snow showers will expand to lower elevations along the Thruway.

The snow will gradually change to showers at sunrise, before steadily drying out by mid-day.

Keep in mind that temperatures near freezing will see a lot of melting, especially in cities like Syracuse. So even though I have a 1″ trace in the forecast for us, it will most likely melt quickly.

Here’s a closer look at the snowfall forecast in Onondaga Counties.
