European city with flights under two hours, known for its sausages and singing tours

SALZBURG, the birthplace of Mozart and The Sound Of Music, is located in the beautiful Eastern Alps of Austria.

While most people associate the Alps with snow-capped peaks and skiing, this city is an ideal summer holiday destination – and affordable too.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE A LOOK?

Are you an avid hiker? Then you can relatively easily go into the mountains from the city center. There you will find beautiful, tree-lined hiking trails. The route takes between 15 minutes and 3 hours.

Hikers also won’t want to miss the Dachstein Glacier.

This impressive ice cap is shrinking every year and could disappear altogether, so take a look while you can.

On a clear day you can enjoy breathtaking views as far as the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

In the compact city, everything is easily accessible on foot, and every building looks like a work of art.

If you are not very good at walking, there is also an electric tram that leaves every ten to twenty minutes and stops at various places in the city.

There are also buses if you want to go further afield.

SOMETHING FOR THE BUCKET LIST?

Die-hard fans of The Sound Of Music can swap the free walking tour for a tour of the film sets. This tour takes you to locations outside the city center, including Mondsee Church, where Maria married the baron.

Virtuosos should not miss Mozart’s Birthplace either. Admission to this palace is included in the Salzburg Card (or €15 per adult for those without a card).

This former home is now a museum and is where the musical prodigy was born in 1756. You can explore the original rooms, which still house certificates, letters and memorabilia.

Experience your own musical adventure by booking tickets for one of the almost daily performances at the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

You can combine a three-course dinner with a performance of Mozart classics at this beautiful location, with the mountains in the background.

WHERE SHOULD I EAT?

Zwettler’s Wirtshaus is the place to go for classic Austrian dishes with a modern twist.

The restaurant is one of the oldest inns in Salzburg and serves everything from traditional bratwurst on mashed potatoes to weiner schnitzel on cranberry potatoes and even vegan strudel.

Are you looking for an affordable restaurant that still fits into the Austrian tradition? Then go to Brandalm on the Dachstein glacier, located between the mountains. Here they serve dishes prepared with ingredients from their own farm.

I FEEL LIKE A DRINK

For a drink with a breathtaking view, the Panoramarestaurant zur Festung at the Hohensalzburg Fortress, also known as the castle on the hill, is the perfect place.

Enjoy cocktails, wine or beer while taking in the panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills.

WHERE SHOULD I STAY?

If you’re looking for something a little more contemporary, Hyperion Hotel is a great option in the heart of the city. It offers stylish open-plan rooms with Mozart-themed artwork.

For something a little more authentic, head to Hotel Berghof, which is nestled in the mountains. Be sure to stay for breakfast, as the buffet is to die for.
